The app icon is the graphic image that appears alongside the app name in the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, and on users’ device home screens. This page covers what makes an effective app icon and the technical specifications needed.

What makes a good mobile app icon?

While an app icon may look similar to a business logo, the icon and logo are two different assets with distinct requirements. Effective mobile app icons:
  • Are designed as a full bleed square-shaped image.
  • Have a simple, uncluttered design and bold color(s).
  • Are easily recognizable as your unique brand.
  • Avoid using text or photo elements.
  • Don’t contain any transparent pixels.
  • Are high-resolution and scale down well to smaller sizes.
  • Don’t use copyrighted material owned by others.
  • Are optimized for use with both the iOS and Android platforms.

Platform considerations

An icon measuring 1024 x 1024 pixels is required to get started on the Apple App Store, and a 512 x 512 pixel icon must be submitted to the Google Play store. These large icons will be scaled down as needed to fit each device screen. When you create the app with Kajabi, you’ll need to upload a 1024 x 1024 pixel icon image file in either PNG or JPG format. The Kajabi team will handle resizing the image file to additional sizes. Apple and Android both provide icon templates and resources for designers: Apple icon design resources.
