Overview

Your niche is the specific group of people you’re going to serve. It’s the foundation for everything else in your business. Identifying and selecting this group is your first step. Don’t overthink this as a permanent decision. You may serve many kinds of markets over the life of your business—today’s goal is to choose your first niche.

Start with an exercise

For each question below, make a list of potential niches. Write down as many as you can—the descriptions and ideas are meant to spark your creativity.

Identify knowledge and life experience

Career

Your career likely represents a significant portion of your life, and you’re probably an expert at what you do. You’ve found ways to achieve results faster and help others do things better with less stress. There’s opportunity to re-engineer your work experience into knowledge people would gladly purchase.

Education

Look back at your time in school. Were there subjects that excited you but fell to the wayside as you jumped into your career? Were there areas of education that shaped your career path and could be reawakened to serve a niche?

Experience

Which experiences stand out as potential niches you could be passionate about? Do friends and family ask you for insights and wisdom in certain areas? Did experiences like traveling, brewing craft beers, fishing, or hiking awaken intense interest? An often overlooked area is when things went wrong. Did you face tremendous challenges or hardships that gave you insights you wish you’d had earlier? Can you turn those low points into resources for others experiencing the same challenges?

Identify passions and interests

Hobbies

Hobbies are a treasure trove of niche ideas—and you’ve already got the passion built in. Whether it’s pinewood derby racing techniques, cookie recipes, fitness, or sports, countless areas can build a great niche. You likely already know where fellow hobbyists hang out and what they’re willing to buy.

Side-jobs or projects

Think about projects you pursue with a profit motive—developing software in the evening, woodworking and selling creations on Etsy, or similar endeavors. These could become the foundation for your niche.

Choose passion over perceived profit

Whether you choose your niche based on life experience or an area of interest, successful people share one thing in common: they’re excited about what they’re building. It may seem smart to choose a niche you see as lucrative, even without genuine interest—like weight loss or making money online because others have found success there. But your excitement over your niche is the ultimate advantage. It’s what keeps you going through the tough days of building an online business.
